The education system provides good quality and it is well developed.
One of the most important tasks for the central and local authorities is to give equal opportunities to all citizens of Ukraine to obtain a high quality education. 7% of Ukrainian professionals, who teach 11 million of students (22% of the population) are involved in the field of education and training.
There are 18,400 establishments for pre-school education. According to the Constitution secondary schools occupy a central position in the system, they are free and quite available. 7 million of students attend 21,900 schools. The private sector in the system of secondary education is low. There are 200 private schools in total (1% of the total amount of students).
Changing the secondary school 10 (11) to the 12-level system, according to the European standards that now exist. Moreover, there is no difference between Ukrainian (post-Soviet) secondary education and high school standards in other European countries.
You can get professional education in 1003 technical institutions on the basis of incomplete secondary education and complete secondary education. In the Ukrainian education system College (technical school) refers to the lower part of higher education.
With more than 1 million students, higher education institutions in Ukraine form the system, which is considered to be one of the biggest in the world. In Ukraine, you can get a higher education in universities (academies, institutes) accredited to the 3-4 level. After 4 years of education, you can get a bachelor’s degree, after 5 years – associate’s degree, after five and a half or 6 years – Master’s degree. Among these degrees the most popular one is associate’s degree.
You become the student of the university based on the results of the entrance examination in July and August. The academic year begins on the 1st of September and lasts till the end of June and consists of two semesters. All students go on vacation between the semesters: the first semester (September-January) and the second one (February-June). The summer holidays last for two months. At the end of each semester a student has 3 or 5 exams and 3 or 5 tests. Successful passing the exams and tests guarantees the opportunity of studying in the next semester. Students attend classes every day, except weekends. They attend lectures, seminars, work with materials in libraries and resource centers.
The higher education courses include internships, in which students have an opportunity to get experience. The priority of the state is to gain qualification. In case of successful graduation students get a diploma, no matter which form of ownership it belongs to. The student also receives an official transcript with a list of the subjects he studied and marks on each of them. Although the state guarantees the correspondence with qualification standards, the employer takes into account how authoritative the university is. Today you can get education in 313 universities, academies and institutes of Ukraine of the 3-4th level of accreditation. Among them, there are 220 government establishments and 93 – non-government. In 54, 9% of public universities students get free education.
