Higher education
With more than 1 million students, higher education institutions in Ukraine form the system, which is considered to be one of the biggest in the world. In Ukraine, you can get a higher education in universities (academies, institutes) accredited to the 3-4 level. After 4 years of education, you can get a bachelor’s degree, after 5 years – associate’s degree, after five and a half or 6 years – Master’s degree. Among these degrees the most popular one is associate’s degree.
You become the student of the university based on the results of the entrance examination in July and August. The academic year begins on the 1st of September and lasts till the end of June and consists of two semesters. All students go on vacation between the semesters: the first semester (September-January) and the second one (February-June). The summer holidays last for two months. At the end of each semester a student has 3 or 5 exams and 3 or 5 tests. Successful passing the exams and tests guarantees the opportunity of studying in the next semester. Students attend classes every day, except weekends. They attend lectures, seminars, work with materials in libraries and resource centers.
The higher education courses include internships, in which students have an opportunity to get experience. The priority of the state is to gain qualification. In case of successful graduation students get a diploma, no matter which form of ownership it belongs to. The student also receives an official transcript with a list of the subjects he studied and marks on each of them. Although the state guarantees the correspondence with qualification standards, the employer takes into account how authoritative the university is.
