When the manufacture of gift art Easter eggs was banned, Easter was celebrated with ‘Krashanki’ (eggs painted with one or different colors), ‘pysanki’ (painted ornaments), the manufacturing tradition of which was strong in the western regions of Ukraine, and ‘skrobanky’. This is a special technique of ornamentation of eggs, when pattern was scratched out with a sharp instrument.
The main theme of the painting is floral design combined with figurative elements: trees, river, sun, houses, birds. Traditional motifs and subjects were images of a rooster or a chicken, the sun and others.
Whatever dishes were on the table, the dinner was started with the Easter cake. Even the crumbs of the bread that fell on the floor, could not be thrown away. The end-piece of the cake was traditionally kept as a talisman that brings happiness.
There are a number of Easter entertainments. The most popular now is the game, in which children and even adults choose Easter eggs and knock them one on another. Whose egg is broken is the loser.
