Tips for applicants: preparing for the exam in mathematics

Despite the fact that it is not compulsory for high school graduates to pass the exam in mathematics, the majority of higher education institutions do not change the tradition: in the list of entrance exams mathematics takes pride of place. The exams in this subject are passed by future engineers and computer scientists, economists and future chemists, and sometimes even future lawyers.
If the list of exams of the university, which are you going to enter, includes mathematics, at the same time you can be sympathized and congratulated. Sympathized – because mathematics is considered one of the most difficult school subjects.
But at the same time it is much easier to prove your knowledge in exact sciences, as after solving a mathematical problem, it is difficult to say that “the topic is not covered”. “the definition is not given” or “the speech is tongue-tied”.
Peculiarities of preparation
When preparing for the entrance examination in mathematics it is necessary to find out what exam is expected – an oral or a written one. And according to this it is necessary to make a system of preparation. Both an oral and written exams require the knowledge of theoretical material, without which it is impossible to solve a problem
But one thing is the preparation for the written exam, where you need to know the theory at a certain level (formulas), and an entirely different matter is an oral exam, in which you must be able to prove everything.
If the applicant will have an oral exam, the next step in his preparation becomes the search of a program for applicants. There you will see a list of questions submitted, for example, in such a book “Programs of entrance examinations to the higher educational institutions of Ukraine” (Kiev, the Abris, 2004).
Never prepare using your school program, even though this is recommended in the selection committee. The school program is almost unlimited, whereas each institution uses a specific set of questions for the entrance exam.
And moreover, a school textbook can contain no development of the formula, which applicants should be able to develop (in the opinion of the examiners). Typically, universities of the III – IV level of accreditation, which belong to the Ministry of Education and Science, use the program in mathematics of the book mentioned above, and universities belonging to other ministries such as the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Finance, may make changes to the program.
Questions in mathematics, which will be at the exam consist of two parts. The first part is “the basic terms”. It is necessary to know the level of formulations and definitions. Although these questions are used by the examiners as extra ones. “What is an equation?”, “What is an identical equation?”, “What is sinus?” – these questions can become difficult even for the most knowledgeable applicant.
It is necessary to pay the same attention to the “basic terms” as to the second part – “The basic formulas and theorems” – questions that require a detailed description. If this is a theorem, you should be able to prove it, if it is a formula, you should develop it.
And a mandatory part of any examination, whether it is oral or written, is to solve problems and exercises.
When preparing for the exam the best assistants will be special problem books for applicants. At first, it is recommended to use both a problem book, and a book with solutions to the problems. But after you see the solutions proposed by the author, you should try to solve the problem yourself.
