According to the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports, among the 195 universities in the 2010-2011 academic year, most foreigners studied in the following educational institutions of Ukraine:

• Odessa Medical University
• Lugansk Medical University
• Kharkiv National Medical University
• Donetsk National Medical University
• National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”
• National Aviation University
• Vinnitsa National Medical University
• National Medical University, Kiev
• Zaporozhye Medical University

As you see from the top 9 of Ukrainian universities that attract foreign students, 7 of them are medical universities, one is technical, and one is Aviation University. And most of them are not from the capital of Ukraine.

In the 2010-2011 academic year, foreigners got education in 195 higher educational institutions of Ukraine. Specialties were very different, but foreigners mostly prefer engineering and medical specialties. In Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv the largest number of foreigners are studying at the Institute of International Relations, Institute of Philology and the Faculty of Cybernetics.

What attracts foreign students in Ukrainian universities?

According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, foreigners are attracted by the opportunity to receive high quality education, competitive in the international labor market and at the same time less expensive as compared to the other countries of Europe and America.

The majority of Ukrainian educational institutions has special preparatory courses for foreigners. Throughout the year they learn the Russian or Ukrainian languages, as well as core subjects. The cost of training courses varies from 1.5 to 3 thousand dollars. After finishing the preparatory department a foreign student may enroll in any university of Ukraine, no matter in which institution he took a preparatory course.
