The University is headed by renowned scientists and professors, operates 16 Scientific Schools in the areas of scientific activity of the University that meet the strategic priority directions of innovation activity in Ukraine, namely: increase in the extraction of hydrocarbons; provision of technological safety of objects of oil and gas complex; resource saving. During their existence, the Scientific Schools have prepared 24 doctors of sciences, 159 candidates of sciences, published more than 4000 scientific articles, 86 monographs, 486 inventions and useful models were created, 10 international projects were executed, a number of normative documents of various levels were developed, more than 60 innovations were implemented.

The scientific, technical and innovation activities of the University are aimed at solving urgent problems of the oil and gas industry, the development, promotion and implementation of new technologies, research prototypes, development of regulatory documents and other scientific results. As a result, the Research Institute of Oil and Gas Energy and Ecology, IFNTUOG received the “Certificate for Quality Management System” UA UA 2.047.09380-15 dated November 13, 2015, according to DSTU ISO 9001: 2009 for the compliance of its performed scientific researches and expert assessments with national and international standards.

International activities of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas are conducted in the following main areas: training of specialists from among foreign citizens; scientific and technical cooperation with foreign organizations and educational institutions; passing of foreign practices and internships by teachers, students and postgraduate students of the University. The University cooperates with foreign educational institutions, associations and other organizations in the field of science and education. In particular, among the established relationships, the leading place is taken by: the University of Regina, the University of Saskatoon (Canada); Mining and Metallurgical Academy named after C.Stazitsa (University of Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy, city of Popov (Polesha)); Dresden Technical University (Germany); Univercity NORD Baia Mar (Romania).
